The bengal cats history
The name bengal comes from the bengals wild relative Felis bengalensis. The bengal cat has inherited a lot of it’s features from Asian leopardcat (ALC), but it’s temperament is that of a domestic cat.
The first litter from an ALC and a domestic cat was born in 1965 in Arizona by Jean Sugden Mill but it wasn’t until the 1970 that several cat breeders started to breed bengals in USA. To give the bengal the right look and temperament several different breeds and domestic cats has been used in breeding programs.
1984 the standard was written and accepted by TICA and 1990 the breed was approved as a breed by TICA.
